Getting
Started with RSIGuard
Welcome
to the RSIGuard program
RSI,
or Repetitive Strain Injuries, are unfortunately
becoming a more common source of injury for people
who regularly use computers. Your company cares
about your health and is providing you with this
software to help prevent injury or the worsening
of symptoms.
Although
it will take a small amount of effort for you to
get used to taking breaks and using other features
of the software, the benefit to your health is certainly
worth it. Remember, the best time to begin taking
care of yourself is before you begin to feel any
symptoms of fatigue or pain from computer use.
Getting
Started
Some
companies restrict users by not letting them install
software on their computers. If your company does
this, you will need assistance from your technical
support department to install RSIGuard. Also, to
register RSIGuard, your computer must have internet
access enabled so that the RSIGuard program can
access the internet. If you
do not have internet access enabled, you will need
assistance from your technical support department
to register RSIGuard.
To
start the installation process:
If you have been told to download the software
from the web or from your companys intranet,
click on the link provided to you. Download the
software, and if asked, save the download to your
Desktop. Open the download after the download
is complete.
The RSIGuard installation process will begin. A welcome
screen will appear, and you should click the Next
button to continue. After perusing the license agreement,
click Yes to continue. Unless your company has instructed
you otherwise, click Next in the following screen
to accept the default Destination Folder (C:\Program
Files\RSIGuard).
After the software finishes installing,
you will need to reboot the computer.
Note,
some computers may be configured to require special
administrative privileges to install software. If
you have any problems installing the software, contact
your system administrator.
Registering
the Software
Each
copy of RSIGuard must be registered. Once You have
purchsed your copy/copies of RSIGuard your registration
code will be provided
by Ergonomics Now
(if no code appears, you are using a trial version
and will need to purchase a code to register RSIGuard).
After
rebooting, RSIGuard will start automatically and
show you the following screen:
Click
on the appropriate choice. If you select Register
RSIGuard, you will see:
Note that this method of
registering RSIGuard requires internet access to
complete. If you have problems, please contact your
system administrator, or send the RSIGuard ID# shown
in the registration window, along with your registration
code, to register@rsiguard.com.
(Note: If you already
installed RSIGuard but accidentally selected Start
Free 45-day Evaluation, you can still enter
your registration code by clicking on the Setup
menu and selecting Purchase/Register RSIGuard.)
After you
enter the registration code, RSIGuard will automatically
download any custom configuration information specific
to your company from the RSIGuard website or from
your companys intranet.
You may see additional
screens during this process of customization letting
you know what is going on. When the registration/customization
process has completed, you will see the following
window:

The RSIGuard Setup Wizard
After completing the registration process or beginning the 45-day trial, the wizard will guide you through the process of tailoring RSIGuard to your personal ergonomic needs.

Answer the questions and read the information in the screens of the setup wizard.
Remember that you can always adjust your selections later, so don't worry if you aren't completely sure how to answer a question.
Note: The various screens in the wizard are shown on the following pages, but due to customizations for your organization, some of the screens shown below might appear differently or not at all.

In
this screen you tell RSIGuard what name you wish to use to
identify yourself. This can be your login name, a nickname,
or whatever you wish to choose.
This screen describes the unique nature of RSIGuard's BreakTimer.
In this screen you tell BreakTimer how long you think you can work without any discomfort. We recommend no user set this above 5 hours. The Willpower setting lets you tell BreakTimer how much you want breaks to be enforced.
In this screen you tell BreakTimer how intrusive breaks can be. Users who are likely to be upset by interruptions should choose the 3rd option.

Here you tell RSIGuard if you want it to track a doctor-prescribed work-restriction. If you don't have a work restriction, just click Next.

This
screen lets you enable pop-up behavior reminders. The first
check enables the reminder messages, and the second check
box tells ForgetMeNots to force you to take a brief microbreak
when the reminder messages appear.

This screen lets you enable AutoClick. This is generally recommended for users with a mousing injury and for users willing to experiment a bit, since it does significantly change the way you use your mouse (or other pointing device).

This screen lets you set up several strain-saving KeyControl hotkeys. You can set these hotkeys (and many others) later if you wish. If you do let the Wizard set these up, make sure to select keys that you don't use in any other applications.
When you finish, you'll see the following screen:

Click the Finish button and RSIGuard will be running!
